Oak Verge Marker Posts
Tired of cars parking on your verge or cutting across the edge of your drive? These solid oak verge marker posts are a simple, good-looking way to protect grass verges, lawns and driveway edges. They’re made by me, by hand, in my workshop in the High Weald.
Unlike plastic or concrete bollards, oak posts blend into a garden or country lane while still making it clear where cars shouldn’t go.
Made by hand, start to finish
Each post starts as rough-sawn oak. I cut it to length, plane it to a clean 70 × 70mm, sand it smooth, shape the top and treat the cut ends, all by hand, so it’s ready to go straight in the ground.
Optional reflectors
Add reflectors and your posts will stand out after dark: red on one side and white on the other, so they catch headlights from either direction. They’re handy on dark lanes, driveway entrances and anywhere you want the posts seen before they’re hit.
Why oak?
- Built to last. Oak can last 20 years or more, even in damp ground.
- No treatment needed. It’s naturally durable, so there’s no painting or staining.
- Solid and substantial. It’s dense hardwood that makes a real barrier, not just a marker.
- Looks the part. It weathers to a soft silver-grey that suits verges, lanes and gardens.
Choose your post
| Length | Approx. metric | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1ft | 30cm | Low markers along lawn and driveway edges |
| 2ft | 61cm | Standard verge markers, clearly visible from a car |
| 3ft | 91cm | Taller markers for entrances, junctions and wider verges |
All posts are 70 × 70mm (approx. 2¾") square, with your choice of pyramid, roof, sloping or square top.
Naturally individual
Splits, knots, waney edges and slight bowing are all part of real oak, and every post will look a little different. I think that’s half the appeal.
Before you install
Many grass verges, even outside your own home, belong to the council rather than the householder. It’s worth checking who owns the verge before putting posts in, as some councils need you to ask permission first.
